Larry Slovek

Larry Slovek was a versatile athlete who could, and did, play many positions on the softball field. He pitched, caught, played third base and the outfield for a number of teams. He played for the Sumner Mint Club hardball team from 1947-50; fastpitch fo rthe Sumner SACS, News Index, and several city league teams from 1947-55; the Irwin-Jones Dodgers from 1956-57; Wood Realty from 1958-59, Spring Air mattress in 1960;  and Absher Construction and the Cheney Stud Oldtimers in slowpitch. He came close to tossing two no-hitters while pitching in the Puyallup city league.  Born in Phillip, S.D. on Nov. 29, 1926, Slovek graduated from Sumner High School in 1944. He played college basketball at Western and later graduated from Pacific Lutheran in 1949. He went on to a career as a teacher and principal in Edgemont, Orting and Tacoma. He coached football in Orting from 1959-65.
