He played football, basketball and baseball at Lincoln and umpired for 21 years but Zierman's all-around athletic skills were most evident on the diamond after high school. He played baseball, fast pitch and slow pitch and was a pitcher, catcher and outfielder. He also coached and played recreation football and won five league championships. His slowpitch teams included the Glo-worm, West End and Dean's tavern teams, Players and Hi Hat Cabaret teams, Heidelberg (5 years) player coach Schlitz, and player coach for Wested Tire who were the 1976 Western Washington League Champions. Among his individual honors he was a member of Fort Ord's Army Fast Pitch champions, MVP in the 1966 Metro Invitational, MVP of the Heidelberg Invitational in 1972, and was named to fourteen all-star teams as a player. He also played on Western State's 1972 County League basketball champions, Bernie's Men's Wear AAU hoopsters of 1958-59, and Bernie's City League baseball entry of 1957.
